Years ago ...I think it's always been like this. Years ago I heard a story about Michael Crichton, who, before he struck it rich with Westworld, Jurassic Park and so on, was working his way through medical school, paying his way by writing potboilers. He wondered whether he could give up the grind of medicine and write full-time. That's when he read an article in Forbes in which it said that only about 200 Americans made their livings as full-time authors. In other words, fewer than one in a million.
